Today is the Earth Day. For iPhone users, you might want to try these "green" apps on your iPhone.
A couple of calculators will help you make more environmentally friendly choices about your usages, a couple of news apps will offer you both news and tips for living greener, and one somewhat odd app will let you vote in favour of the Earth.
Here are the apps :
1. Vote Earth
As the name suggests, this app allows you to vote for the Earth. It doesn't really tell you what this means apart from saying it's a vote "against climate change", but you can watch a shiny animation of your vote travelling to Copenhagen for the UN Climate Summit in December in "real time" and share the app with your friends via Twitter and email. It also has a link to Earth Hour, where you can sign up in support, so it's not completely baffling.
2. Carbon Calc
Carbon Calc is a Green House Gas (GHG) emissions calculator. It allows you to input basic information that will give you a rough guide to how big your carbon footprint is based on your home energy use, how much you drive and how many flights you take per year. You can then compare your carbon footprint against the global average. It's not comprehensive, but it is designed to give you a rough idea of where you can make greener choices.
3. iGreenpeace
Greenpeace's app is fronted by a cute little penguin mascot, Alex. You can play a clapping game with Alex, which is diverting for about 10 seconds, but the meat of the app lies in News tab, where you can catch up on what Greenpeace has been doing around the globe. You can also use the app to sign up to become a Greenpeace supporter, or to quickly and easily make donations on the go.
4. GreenNexxus Green Tips
GreenNexxus' Green Tips are entirely generated by the community, so you'll probably come across some pretty weird entries, but if you can sort through the dross, there's some pretty good advice to be found. The tips are linked to the GreenNexxus Web site, so you can head over to rate tips and submit your own. Probably the most useful part of the app is the 'Recents' tab, where you'll find highly rated tips that mysteriously don't appear in the Top Rated tab.
5. Ecoki
The Ecoki reader is a cool little resource for catching up on the latest green news from the Ecoki online community. You can read scientific articles, catch up on eco lifestyle news, collect vegan recipes and check out reviews of sustainable and eco-friendly products collected by the Ecoki team. It's a bite-sized, accessible way of increasing your awareness of environmentally friendly lifestyle practises.
6. My Water Diary
Using an easy-to-navigate interface with cute little icons, My Water Diary lets you calculate how much water you use in the course of day-to-day life, from flushing the toilet to how much you drink to what you use in washing. A simple slider lets you adjust the quantity of water you use, giving you an accurate representation of how much you consume over the course of a week.
