Previously the trademark was owned by Fujitsu who registered it in March 2003 when they created a wireless handheld computer specifically used by retailers called the iPad.
From what we see the iPad trademark was assigned over to Apple on March 17 this year just in time for the iPad to launch next week.
There has been much speculation over the last few months about the iPad trademark. Apple initiated opposition proceedings challenging the validity of the mark in September last year. However, the proceedings never developed into anything substantive and Apple simply filed three requests for extensions of time, presumably while they were in talks with Fujitsu.

Once again, Apple shows the world there's no one who can stop Apple from owning what they want. Trademark issue? None at all. Apple just bought it from Fujitsu. Apple probably made Fujitsu an offer it couldn’t refuse. So, problem solved.
